12 Peel region child care centres saved
Public child care in Ontario is in grave danger, and CUPE Ontario members have been busy trying to defend and strengthen the system. Already facing the triple threat of a fragmented delivery system, inadequate funding and pressure from Ontario's bungled full-day kindergarten implementation, centres now face two more threats: budget-slashing councils and privatization.
In January, Peel Region shocked parents with a staff report recommending to close 12 regionally-operated child care centres, a decision that would put hundreds of people out of work and leave 800 of families without care. Thanks to quick organizing, parents packed the meeting and the Region decided to keep the centres until September while a task force looks at additional research, options and public consultation are completed.
