Social Services

[2009 | 2008 | 2007]

CUPE Ontario's Social Service Workers Coordinating Committee (SSWCC) represents over 30,000 social service workers in Ontario including:

  • ACL – Associations for Community Living
  • CAS – Children's Aid Society
  • Childcare
  • Community Agencies
  • Municipal Social Services Workers

This sector also includes child protection, children's mental health, shelters/hostels and WSIB workers.  Social Services faces major challenges in reversing chronic government underfunding that began with the Harris Tory years. Those deep cuts have not been fully reversed by the current Liberal government. As well, the sector must contend with the governments' ‘transforming' and ongoing restructuring of services which is leading to:

  • Privatization/contracting out of services/jobs
  • Increased workload, violence and stress for front line workers
  • High staff turnover rates that adversely impacts on the quality of services
  • Gaps in services for vulnerable people
  • Increase in low-waged, casual jobs
  • De-skilling of workers

CUPE Ontario's social services sector continues to aggressively confront these challenges through a number of major campaign initiatives.
