Ontario Municipal Employees Coordinating Committee
The Ontario Municipal Employees Coordinating Committee is a body composed of CUPE locals of municipal employees. Workers in these locals maintain roads, operate water and sewage plants, perform clerical and technical duties, install and repair traffic lights, deliver social services, maintain our parks, pick up garbage and keep our streets clean. They even look after animals in the Metro zoo!
In all, CUPE represents 80,000 municipal employees in Ontario. CUPE has also organized workers employed by private companies that perform contract work financed by public funds. OMECC keeps a close eye on collective bargaining, pensions, government legislation and other political and social justice issues.
OMECC coordinates campaigns against concessions, contracting out and anti-worker legislation, giving workers a voice in protecting municipal services. The committee also includes two sub-committees:
Library Workers Sub-committee
CUPE Ontario represents several thousand Library workers across Ontario. This committee deals with the many varied issues affecting library workers, including coordination of bargaining and provincial legislation.
Electrical Utility Workers Sub-committee
CUPE Ontario represents several thousand utility workers across Ontario. This sector is currently undergoing massive change as a result of the introduction of deregulation with Bill 35. The committee is currently working on issues arising out of this piece of legislation.
