Canada is facing a crucial fork in the road for our public Medicare system.

In 2014, the 10-Year Health Accord that sets the terms for health care funding and priorities between the federal and provincial governments will expire.

To date, the federal government has refused to renegotiate a new Health Accord.

This summer all the provincial and territorial premiers from across Canada will get together in July at Niagara-on-the-Lake for the last “Council of the Federation” meeting before the Accord elapses.

CUPE is working with the Canadian and Ontario Health Coalitions, the Council of Canadians, seniors’ and patient advocacy groups, unions and others to put pressure on the federal government.

A Shadow Summit and Mass Rally are being organized to coincide with the Council of the Federation meetings on Wednesday, July 24 and Thursday, July 25.

Our goal is to pressure the federal government to return to the table and negotiate a renewed Health Accord.

The Harper government has done nothing to uphold single-tier public Medicare, and now intends to retreat from a strong role in upholding national standards. The health care system must get the stable and adequate funding necessary to serve the needs of Canadians.

Fred Hahn, Candace Rennick, Michael Hurley and Kelly O’Sullivan are attending the Shadow Summit. CUPE members are joining them at the mass rally on Thursday, July 25 at Niagara-on-the-Lake. We are organizing buses to the event.  Contact Preethy Sivakumar at 905-739-9739 to reserve your spot on the bus
